Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)

Overview

Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is a powerful business intelligence tool that provides online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining capabilities. It allows organizations to create multidimensional data models and perform complex analysis on large volumes of data. SSAS enables users to gain valuable insights and make informed business decisions based on in-depth data analysis.

SSAS offers two main components: Multidimensional Models and Tabular Models. Multidimensional Models are based on the traditional OLAP technology, allowing users to create multidimensional cubes that can be easily navigated and queried. Tabular Models, on the other hand, are based on the in-memory columnar technology, providing faster query performance and a more intuitive modeling experience.

With SSAS, users can define hierarchies, calculations, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to create rich, interactive reports and dashboards. It supports various data sources, including relational databases, data warehouses, and external data sources. SSAS also provides advanced data mining capabilities, enabling users to discover patterns and relationships within their data to uncover valuable insights.

Furthermore, SSAS integrates seamlessly with other components of the Microsoft Business Intelligence (BI) stack, such as SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), to create end-to-end BI solutions. This allows users to extract, transform, and load data using SSIS, analyze and model the data using SSAS, and present the results using SSRS.

Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is a robust and versatile tool for data analysis and business intelligence. It empowers organizations to leverage their data assets and gain deeper insights into their business operations. Whether using multidimensional or tabular models, SSAS provides a flexible and scalable platform for building advanced analytical solutions that drive informed decision-making and enhance overall business performance.

Course Details

  • What You will Learn

Analysis Services is a combination of two analytical engines (VertiPaq for multidimensional cubes and Data Mining and xVelocity for Tabular Data Models) used in decision support and business analytics. It provides enterprise-grade semantic data model capabilities for business intelligence (BI), data analysis, and reporting applications such as Power BI, Excel, Reporting Services, and other data visualization tools. This course provides a full introduction to the use of both of these engines in an enterprise environment.  You will learn about creating cubes and their constituent components, the use of MDX to query the cubes, as well as how to customize a cube with KPI, actions, perspectives, and language translations.  You will also learn about the differences and similarities between cubes and tabular data models, how to create a tabular data model, and the use of DAX to query the model. The third major component of the course is a form of Machine Learning called Data Mining.  Data Mining is the analysis of large data set to reveal hidden patterns and trends. This course will teach you how to create a Data Mining solution, how to compare and validate different data mining options (models) for a given data set, and how to use your chosen model in a consumer-friendly client.
